Punch Buggy / Slug Bug / Punch Dub
This post is for a popular car spotting game where players are looking for just one type of car, specifically Volkswagen Type 1, the Volkswagen Beetle, also know as the VW Beetle or Bug. The game is known as Punch Buggy, Slug Bug or Punch Dub. Although Punch Dub is a newer version of the game for all VW models (we'll get to this later).
Punch Buggy is a variant on the Yellow Car or Spotto game (well maybe Spotto is a variant of Punch Buggy, no one can be sure which came first). Players are typically rear seat passengers in a travelling vehicle. Players call out Punch Buggy and the colour of the car, i.e. Punch Buggy Blue, then "punch" the nearest passenger.
We will stop here quickly. It is important to note that in no way does True Review support violence, aggression or assault. Also True Review take no responsibility for any accident or injury that may occur. This "punch" should be considered a love tap, a light bump on the arm or shoulder. Remember this is a game, you are not trying to cause bruises or break their arm. Your not in a boxing ring nor are you taking part in a UFC match. The "punch" is simply to alert the other player to the fact that you spotted a VW Beetle.
Basic Rule |
Description |
Example |
The VW should be a classic VW
Beetle. |
This rule is for the true
Punch Buggy aficionado who only counts the original VW Beetle or Bug |
|
Call the colour. Call the color. |
When calling Punch Buggy,
follow with the colour of the Beetle spotted. |
Calling the colour helps
others identify the Beetle that has been spotted. |
The Punch |
Deliver the punch within 5
seconds of making the call. Punch the upper arm/shoulder.
Not the leg, tummy, chest or head. Reminder, this is a light
bump or “Love Tap”. Don’t try and give everyone a dead arm, bruises or an
injury. |
Don’t try and hold onto you
punch for a surprise attach 20 minutes later. If you make the call, deliver
the punch immediately. |
Vehicle is not in “uniform”. |
What's a uniform? Police, Taxis etc. are
vehicles in uniform. It’s now highly unlikely
you’ll come across group of Taxi’s or police VW Beetles, unless your in
Mexico which would also be very rare now. You could pretty much ignore
this rule. |
|
Vehicle should be active. |
The Beetle being spotted
should be part of the general flow of traffic or active with a driver. |
Parked or stationary Beetles
without a driver don't count. |
Town rules, City rules or
road trip rules. |
You may also like to have
local rules and out of town rules. |
If you are in a small town or
rural area, maybe include all Beetles, driver or not, parked or not. Just
simply spot the VW Beetle. Then when travelling out of
town, more strict rules could apply, as with more vehicles on the road there
is more chance to spot a Beetle. |
Spotted Beetle |
Once Punch Buggy has been
called for a Beetle, no one can then call the same Beetle in that trip or
during that same day. |
Your on a road trip and Punch
Buggy is called for a Beetle on the highway and travelling next to you. That
vehicle is now out. No, you can’t keep calling Punch Buggy every five
minutes. No, you can’t call Punch Buggy every time the vehicle goes out of
view then back into view. You are in a small town and
travel to the shops and home three times in one day. No, you can’t call Punch
Buggy on the parked Beetle each time you drive past it. |
Illegal spot |
If you call Punch Buggy for a
vehicle that isn’t a Beetle you lose a point. |
You call Punch Buggy and the
vehicle is not actually a beetle – lose a point. Examples
include: Fiat 500 or
600 Subaru 360 |
Don’t punch the driver |
This could cause a serious
accident, so don’t punch the driver. |
If only two people are in the
vehicle, play without the punch. |
If you have had enough of the classic version of Punch Buggy, or you simply don't see enough of the classic Beetles in your area, you might like to try a variation as below.
Variation |
Description |
Example |
Punch Kombi |
The Volkswagen Type 2 – The
Kombi Van or Combi Van, Transporter, Microbus or VW Bus. |
|
Whale Tail |
Following the craze of Beetle
modifications, this outrageous addition mimics the Porsche 911 spoiler and
really makes the VW Beetle stand out. |
|
Punch Dub |
A more recent addition
following an advertising campaign by Volkswagen at the 2010 SuperBowl. Punch Dub opens the game to
any and all VW models both new and old. Players can be traveling in a
vehicle, walking, standing or sitting at a café having a coffee. The spotted VW can also be travelling or parked and with or without a driver. |

It's just for fun...
