TELSTRA
Almost every living being on earth now has a mobile phone or two, or maybe more (for various reasons which we are not at liberty to discuss). Australia has a population of around 25 million people, Telstra has a residential and small business mobile phone population of around 15.5 million, more than 60 percent market share.
In the 2020-2021 financial year July through June, Telstra looked this this...
Total income of $23 billion
Profit of $1.9 billion
Payed to Shareholders $1.9 billion
Key Management Personnel $30 million - CEO, Executives and directors
CEO gets $2.4 Million salary plus cash and share bonuses based on performance of around $600k and 600,000 shares.
In the 2021-2022 financial year July through June, Telstra look this this...
Total income of $22 billion
Profit of $1.8 billion
Payed to Shareholders $1.9 billion
Key Management Personnel $31.5 million - CEO, Executives and directors
CEO gets $2.4 Million salary plus cash and share bonuses based on performance of around $600k and 600,000 shares.
For example, the CEO currently has 2.5 million shares.
So for a dividend of 16 cents paid to shareholders, the CEO gets not only share equity (which can be sold at a later date at market value) but also an additional payout of $400,000 on top of salary and cash bonuses.
Telsta has a retail customer base of around 15.5 million users of which there are 8.7 million postpaid mobile users. This retail business makes up around 40% of the income.
The $1.9 billion profit equates to approximately $10 per month for a $50 per month account. Would you not like to see a bit of a break for retail customers who are earning significantly lees than the executives of Telstra. A couple of dollars increased on commercial customers could see a really helpful and noticeable reduction of monthly costs for the average Australian.
Anyway, not concerned what Telstra do anymore, however this picture will look similar for most telecommunications companies, I will never go back to Telstra again.
While the service itself, i.e. being able to make a call or watch a video, is really good (Telstra have pretty much the best mobile coverage), the customer service is severely lacking. Around 98% of the people you talk to, either in frontline customer help or background supporting departments are absolutely terrible. They are unbelievably rude and cannot be trusted. If you have ever had an issue with you phone, reception or bill, you'll know what I'm talking about. After months of banging my head against a brick wall, that could not talk the same language as me, I finally gave up, switched to another provider and the issues were fixed in literally minutes.
BE CAREFULL... If you're not happy with your provider and they are no helping you resolve your issues, switch provider. Take them to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsmen.
