Punch Buggy

Punch Buggy / Slug Bug / Punch Dub This post is for a popular car spotting game where players are looking for just one type of car, specifically Volkswagen Type 1, the Volkswagen Beetle, also know as the VW Beetle or Bug. The game is known as Punch Buggy, Slug Bug or Punch Dub. Although Punch Dub is a newer version of the game for all VW models (we'll get to this later).  Punch Buggy is a variant on the Yellow Car or Spotto game (well maybe Spotto is a variant of Punch Buggy, no one can be sure which came first). Players are typically rear seat passengers in a travelling vehicle. Players call out Punch Buggy and the colour of the car, i.e. Punch Buggy Blue, then "punch" the nearest passenger.  We will stop here quickly. It is important to note that in no way does True Review support violence, aggression or assault. Also True Review take no responsibility for any accident or injury that may occur. This "punch" should be considered a love tap, a light bump on the...

Red Bike, Yellow Bike, I Want To Ride My Bicycle

 RED BIKES, YELLOW BIKES

If you've ever driven through Gundagai, Snowy Valleys towns of Tumut and Batlow or through the Snowy Monaro area around Cooma, you will have wondered "what are all these yellow bikes?" If your lucky and you've seen one, you might even think, "what was that red bike for?" I'm sure you have even come across the odd green bike or maybe another colour bike.

All these brightly coloured bikes perfectly placed on a fence, fixed into a tree, in the garden and on top of a roof, are promoting or objecting to the creation of a "Rail Trail," a multi-use walking, cycling, horse riding, scooter riding or pram pushing pathway build on disused and abandoned railway corridors.

These rail trails are being promoted and developed all over NSW and across Australia. In NSW, at a massive 21km long and currently the longest rail trail, is the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail (when I first looked at this in 2020, it was the only rail trail in NSW). There are now more than 10 trails in NSW, only a little behind Victoria who have more than 40 trails and well behind Queensland, who have the longest at 161km.

Around 55% of Australian households own a working bike, but more than 80% of the population will ride a bike for recreational purposes at least once each year. Even though only around 33% of people will replace petrol power with pedal power at some point during the year, more than 13% or 3.5million people will take to riding a bike each and every week.

As a child, it is such an exciting and exhilarating experience to learn how to ride a bike. As "Queen" so brilliantly put it "Bicycle, Bicycle, Bicycle, I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike."

Even though riding a bicycle is something almost everyone learns as a child, these rail trials are not supported by everyone. These trails impact people in different ways. Maybe you live near one or your property is "split" by one. Maybe you just have a disliking for bicycle people.

As far as I have seen, the yellow bikes seem to be much more prominent and easier to find.

Take a look through the collection of bikes. Have you found one? Got a better photo? Please share to rail.trails@truereview.com.au.
